Queendom by Charles Rice

Queendom by Charles Rice

$1,000.00

“Queendom” by Charles Rice is a bold and contemporary celebration of Black femininity, identity, and inner royalty. The painting presents the back profile of a woman crowned with an abstract jeweled crown, her figure composed of layered textures, fragmented colors, and expressive collage-like brushwork. Rather than focusing on facial expression, Rice allows the subject’s posture, silhouette, and presence to communicate strength, confidence, and dignity.

The crown becomes the symbolic centerpiece of the composition, representing power, self-worth, resilience, and inherited greatness. Positioned atop a natural afro silhouette, it reinforces the idea that royalty and beauty exist naturally within the subject herself — unapologetic and self-defined.

Rice uses vibrant patches of reds, yellows, blues, whites, and blacks across the figure’s body, creating the impression that her experiences, struggles, culture, and history are woven directly into her being. The layered textures resemble fragments of memory, city life, emotion, and identity coming together to form a complete and powerful woman.

The abstract background, filled with energetic strokes of cool blues, whites, and muted grays, creates movement around the figure while allowing her colorful form to command the composition. The contrast between the dark silhouette and vibrant internal textures symbolizes both visibility and invisibility — the complexity of carrying strength while navigating the world.

“Queendom” is a visual affirmation of empowerment and self-recognition. Charles Rice transforms the female figure into a universal symbol of grace, resilience, and cultural pride, reminding viewers that true royalty is not given — it is embodied.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Rice has built a dynamic career that bridges fine art, design, and cultural storytelling.

Early in his career, Rice worked as an artist and graphic designer for The Walt Disney Company, where he refined his technical skill and developed a strong foundation in visual storytelling. Rice also served as a Fine Artist at E&S Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky—one of the region’s most respected galleries—where he exhibited work, engaged with collectors, and contributed to the gallery’s reputation for showcasing museum-quality African American art.

Rice has been commissioned for major public and private installations, including a 22-piece installation for the West End hospital in Louisville, further solidifying his impact through large-scale, community-centered work. His work has reached thousands through live art experiences, most notably as the lead artist for the Melanin Art Series, where he created portraits for over 5,000 individuals.

Beyond his studio practice, Rice is a respected curator and cultural leader. He serves as the Art Director and Curator of the Lyric Art Gallery in Lexington, Kentucky, where he leads exhibitions, develops programming, and creates opportunities for emerging and established artists. He is also the founder of RiceWorkz, a creative brand that produces original artwork, prints, and cultural experiences, and the former Chief Editor of Mogul Magazine, a publication highlighting Black culture and lifestyle.

Rice’s work has been exhibited nationally, including appearances on the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise, and continues to gain recognition for its bold aesthetic and cultural depth.
