Purple and Gold by Charles Rice

Purple and Gold by Charles Rice

In Purple and Gold, Charles Rice masterfully blends painting, sculpture, and assemblage into a richly textured celebration of beauty, strength, and spiritual elegance. The work transcends traditional portraiture, creating a dimensional experience where the subject appears to emerge from the canvas itself.

At the center of the composition, a Black woman is depicted in profile, her gaze lifted upward in quiet confidence and contemplation. Her expression radiates dignity and self-assurance, while her elongated neck and graceful posture evoke the timeless elegance of classical portraiture. Thick, sculptural strands of textured hair sweep dramatically across the composition, creating movement and energy that seem to flow beyond the boundaries of the frame.

Rice employs a luxurious palette of deep blacks, rich purples, shimmering silvers, and radiant golds. These colors carry symbolic weight: purple represents royalty, spirituality, and wisdom, while gold signifies prosperity, achievement, and divine light. Together, they create an atmosphere of reverence and empowerment.

The heavily layered surface is one of the painting’s most compelling features. Metallic accents, textured materials, and abstract passages of color build a landscape of history and memory around the figure. The work feels excavated rather than painted—as if fragments of identity, culture, and experience have been uncovered and assembled into a singular vision of resilience and grace.

The circular forms and celestial textures behind the subject suggest a moon, halo, or cosmic presence, elevating the figure beyond the personal and into the symbolic. She becomes both an individual and an archetype—a representation of Black femininity, creativity, and enduring strength.

Rice’s mixed-media approach allows the piece to operate on multiple levels. It is simultaneously a portrait, a sculpture, and an abstract narrative. Every crack, layer, and metallic fragment contributes to the story, reminding viewers that beauty is often forged through experience, transformation, and perseverance.

Purple and Gold is ultimately a tribute to the majesty found within. Through texture, symbolism, and masterful craftsmanship, Charles Rice presents a vision of a woman who embodies royalty not through title or status, but through presence, confidence, and an unshakable sense of self. The work stands as a powerful celebration of heritage, identity, and the enduring brilliance of the human spirit.
