Queen Mother / Mitochondrial Eve by Jayda Johnson

Queen Mother / Mitochondrial Eve by Jayda Johnson

$10,000.00

Queen Mother / Mitochondrial Eve by Jayda Johnson is a powerful reimagining of classical motherhood portraiture through the lens of African identity, ancestry, and feminine divinity. The painting centers a regal Black woman seated among three children, evoking the timeless imagery of Renaissance Madonnas while reclaiming the narrative through contemporary cultural symbolism and Afrocentric presence.

Wrapped in flowing purple drapery — a color historically associated with royalty, spirituality, and power — the central figure radiates calm authority and maternal strength. Her natural afro becomes almost halo-like against the richly patterned background inspired by African textiles and kente cloth, grounding the work in heritage, lineage, and cultural memory. The children surrounding her represent unity across humanity, referencing the concept of “Mitochondrial Eve,” the scientific theory tracing all human maternal ancestry to one shared African origin.

Johnson masterfully contrasts softness and power throughout the composition. The mother’s gaze is steady and contemplative, while the children reach toward her with trust, dependence, and innocence. Their positioning creates a visual cycle of nourishment, protection, and connection — reinforcing the idea of motherhood not only as biological care, but as the origin of civilization itself.

The painting merges classical composition with contemporary Black identity, challenging historical exclusions within Western art while celebrating Black womanhood as sacred, foundational, and eternal. Through warmth, symbolism, and emotional depth, Queen Mother / Mitochondrial Eve becomes both a portrait and a statement: an honoring of the Black maternal figure as the beginning of humanity, culture, and life itself.

Description

Jayda Johnson is a Kentucky-based fine artist specializing in oil painting and sculpture. She earned her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Kentucky in 2023, where she cultivated her passion for material process, figurative work, and conceptual storytelling. Her practice spans painting, ceramics, metal, plaster, and poetry—merging historical narratives with personal identity.

Her work has been curated and exhibited locally and regionally, highlighting themes of memory, resilience, and the complexities of collective history.

Through richly textured surfaces, archival imagery, and symbolic motifs, Jayda fearlessly blends Afro-surrealism and expressive mark-making to uncover deeper truths about identity, memory, and the human condition. Her work not only honors the resilience and beauty of the Black experience but also calls for a reckoning with the legacies of history and the realities we construct today.
