Degrading Memories by Jayda Johnson

Degrading Memories by Jayda Johnson

$1,800.00

Degrading Memories by Jayda Johnson is a deeply introspective painting that examines memory, loss, and the slow erosion of connection through fragmented domestic imagery and emotional symbolism. The composition feels both documentary and dreamlike, presenting an ordinary family scene layered with emotional tension and fading familiarity.

At the center of the work, two Rottweilers rest on the floor, grounding the scene with loyalty, protection, and companionship. Around them, figures appear disconnected within the same shared space — a shirtless man bends downward in labor or exhaustion, while seated family members converse quietly in the background. A child rests in an adult’s lap, introducing innocence and continuity amidst the emotional fragmentation of the environment.

Johnson frames the composition with cascading blue flowers that appear almost like tears, memories, or invasive thoughts creeping into the physical space. The flowers function symbolically throughout the painting, suggesting remembrance, grief, and the persistence of emotional residue over time. Portions of the image seem visually “broken apart,” as though memories themselves are deteriorating or being consumed by time and emotional distance.

The muted lighting and softened realism create a feeling of recollection rather than direct observation, like moments remembered imperfectly from childhood or family history. Everyday details become emotionally charged, turning an ordinary gathering into a meditation on instability, nostalgia, and emotional survival. The title, Degrading Memories, reflects the painting’s exploration of how personal histories fade, distort, and fracture while still leaving emotional traces behind.

Through layered symbolism and intimate storytelling, Jayda Johnson captures the painful beauty of remembering. The work speaks to the complexity of family dynamics, the passage of time, and the quiet emotional weight carried within familiar spaces long after moments have passed.

Description

Jayda Johnson is a Kentucky-based fine artist specializing in oil painting and sculpture. She earned her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Kentucky in 2023, where she cultivated her passion for material process, figurative work, and conceptual storytelling. Her practice spans painting, ceramics, metal, plaster, and poetry—merging historical narratives with personal identity.

Her work has been curated and exhibited locally and regionally, highlighting themes of memory, resilience, and the complexities of collective history.

Through richly textured surfaces, archival imagery, and symbolic motifs, Jayda fearlessly blends Afro-surrealism and expressive mark-making to uncover deeper truths about identity, memory, and the human condition. Her work not only honors the resilience and beauty of the Black experience but also calls for a reckoning with the legacies of history and the realities we construct today.
