Cowboy Life by Charles Rice

Cowboy Life by Charles Rice

$1,000.00

“Cowboy Life” by Charles Rice is a contemporary and deeply symbolic portrait that reimagines the image of the Black cowboy through abstraction, texture, and emotional storytelling. The painting captures a lone female figure standing in quiet confidence, her body partially silhouetted while vibrant layers of color burst across her dress like fragments of memory, culture, and lived experience.

Rice intentionally shifts away from traditional Western imagery, choosing instead to focus on identity, resilience, and presence. The figure’s stance — one hand raised toward her hat or head — suggests reflection, independence, and strength. Her dark silhouette contrasts against the explosion of color woven into her clothing, symbolizing the complexity and richness beneath the surface of everyday life.

The title, “Cowboy Life,” connects the work to the overlooked legacy of Black cowboys and cowgirls in American history. Rather than portraying the subject in literal Western detail, Rice uses abstraction to modernize the narrative and emphasize freedom, endurance, labor, and individuality. The figure becomes both timeless and contemporary — rooted in history while existing confidently in the present.

The textured neutral background, layered with expressive white brushstrokes, creates movement around the figure while allowing the vibrant garment to command attention. The colorful dress feels almost like a patchwork of experiences, communities, and emotions stitched together into one identity.

“Cowboy Life” speaks to self-reliance, cultural pride, and the beauty of carving one’s own path. Charles Rice transforms the cowboy archetype into something more intimate and human — a meditation on perseverance, heritage, and the quiet strength required to stand tall through life’s journey.
