Description
Charles Rice is an American visual artist, curator, and creative entrepreneur whose work celebrates culture, community, and the beauty of the African American experience. Working primarily in oils, pastels, and mixed media, Rice is known for his vibrant figurative paintings that capture themes of family, music, spirituality, heritage, and everyday life with warmth, emotion, and authenticity.
A graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Rice began his creative journey at an early age and later gained professional experience working with The Walt Disney Company. Throughout his career, he has developed a distinctive artistic style that blends fine art traditions with contemporary storytelling, creating works that resonate with collectors, institutions, and communities across the country.
Rice is the founder of RiceWorkz, a nationally collected art brand, and the creator of the Melanin Art Series, a portrait initiative that has connected thousands of individuals through custom artwork celebrating identity, achievement, and legacy. His artwork has been commissioned and collected by hospitals, museums, corporations, and private collectors, including Brown-Forman, Owensboro Health, and numerous public and private institutions.
In addition to his work as an artist, Rice serves as Art Gallery Director and Curator at the Historic Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center in Lexington, Kentucky. There he oversees exhibitions, develops cultural programming, supports emerging artists, and works to expand access to the arts throughout the region. His leadership has helped position the Lyric Art Gallery as a destination for contemporary and culturally significant visual art.
